Excavations and embankments

Building in inner-city areas is characterized by complex boundary conditions. As a rule, several basement levels are built and therefore deep excavation pits are required. Solutions must be found as early as the planning phase to minimize the impact on neighbouring buildings, traffic routes and media during construction. In addition to stability, serviceability, durability and cost-effectiveness are decisive factors here.

This usually requires sophisticated and low-deformation shoring constructions with several bracing layers and, in the area of groundwater, sealing or dewatering measures. Added to this are the aspects of groundwater protection and the reduction of noise and dust emissions through suitable construction methods.

If there is sufficient space in the vicinity of a planned construction project, embanked excavation pits can usually be constructed. In the case of embankments and dams in the vicinity of groundwater and hydraulic structures, the flow of water plays an important role.

In the course of implementing these demanding construction measures, the requirements of the approval authorities and other stakeholders must be closely monitored. Extensive measurement programs are used for monitoring as part of the observation method.
